Working Holidays for the Villagers of Siri Peracom

After the planning meeting the villagers of Siri Peracom got straight to work. Using the materials supplied by Aid Sri Lanka they have already completed a number of tasks.

The floor has been cemented and with attention to detail and the keen desire to provide a nice library for the children, they used a combination of red and black cement, creating a simple pattern on the ground.

The internal and external walls have now been plastered and painting is underway. The local carpenter is working on the window and doors and the fixtures and fittings have been purchased.

The work was interrupted temporarily for the local elections which took place on 30 March. In Sri Lanka, children do not attend school the week of elections and since Siri Peracom 7 was being used as a poling station there was a heavy police presence while the ballot boxes were there. The three days surrounding an election are usually considered public holidays with very few people working. However, a couple of villagers chose to spend these rest days painting the newly plastered walls.

With Sinhalese New Year this week, work usually ceases for five days. However, small dedicated teams of villagers helped with making the pavement around the building and applying the final coat of paint to the inside walls.

The parents and villagers really want to finish this work quickly and to a high standard so that their children can read and learn in a pleasant environment. It is fantastic to be able to help them to achieve this goal.
