Siri Peracom: New Library Open

An elaborate ceremony marked the opening of the Siri Peracom School’s new library this week. Having been under construction since 1980 it was a great occasion to see the building finally finished and furnished.

There was a big band welcome for the guests of honour which included the Zonal Director of Education and local parliamentarians. After the ceremonial cutting of the ribbons and the unveiling of the plaque thanking funders Sibford School the guests were treated to a special welcome song by some of the students.

During the speeches the Principal recalled how the parents had recognised the need for a library long ago and had laid the foundation stone for this building over 20 years ago. He told how since then they had been adding to the building when they had the money to buy the materials. Speeches by the parents, children and teachers echoed the words of the Principal and confirmed that this was indeed an important day for Siri Peracom.

In addition to completing the building, the project furnished the room with tables, chairs and bookshelves, all made by the local carpenter. The vast selection of books comprise standard text books for all ages as well as both traditional and modern fiction from Sri Lanka and abroad. The outing to purchase the books had been an adventure of its own when a teacher and three children of different ages took an exciting trip to Colombo and assisted with the choices to supplement the academic requirements.

As the books were unpacked and logged by staff, some of the children were already eagerly reading them, before they even made it to the shelves.

There is little doubt that the books will be well read and will play an important part, not only in the academic achievements of the students but just as importantly in their leisure time.
