Ekamutu Pre-School and Community Centre Now Open

In under two months since the foundation stone was laid, the new building at Ekamutu is now complete.

Ekamutu Welfare Society and its energetic leader Suwineetha really are the centre of the community in Gandara Devinuwa and the building will be the new location for all the activities from pre-school and dance classes to various support groups as well as the venue for all the community meetings.

Members of the community and distinguished guests from the District were treated to a wonderful ceremony of speeches and spectacles. Suwineetha gave thanks and spoke of the difficulties of the community and of the joy it gave her to be standing in this new hall. She need not have said it, the joy was written in her face and her permanent smile. Amal of the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies told how Suwineetha was one of the most active community leaders he had come across and the work of Ekamutu was most impressive. Members of large International Charities spoke of how they had also been impressed by the work of Suwineetha and had recognised the importance of the new building but had been restricted by policies of their organisations and had been unable to assist.

The guests were given a taste of the skills of Ekamutu’s dance group with a variety of dances, each in a different style and each more colourful than the one before. The teachers had also helped the pre-school children prepare a dance routine.

It has been fantastic working closely with such a hardworking and dedicated woman and seeing firsthand the support she gives to members of her community. Through using a team of local workers, overseen and managed by Claire and Suwineetha we were able to ensure that the work was carried out quickly and to a high standard while avoiding the 17% contractors commission, making Aid Sri Lanka donations go even further.

As with all successful projects, it really has been the result of a lot of hard work by a number of different people working towards the same goal. There is no doubt that the community will benefit greatly form this building in the months and years to come.
