Following our drop in Trincomalee we drove one of the lorries
north to Mullaitivu with a donation of 500 mosquito nets for camps in
the area and other medicine remaining from the clinic not
redistributed elsewhere. Mullaitivu is situated on the north-eastern
coast of Sri Lanka, in LTTE controlled area. We were given an escort
to Mullaitivu where we met with the Planning and Development
Secretariat, visited camps and looked around the coastal side of
town. We also met a representative from the UN who was overseeing the
co-ordination of aid in the region. We informed them and ZOA (another
NGO who are providing mosquito nets for the area) of our delivery.
The planning here was generally excellent. Sites have already been
identified to move families from the camps to. We saw examples of
temporary houses which are going to be built to house people while
longer term reconstruction gets under way. The big aid effort from
the major NGOs is now well under way too. This was a special occasion
for Panni and Jayantha who had never been able to travel to this part
of the country before due to the ethnic conflict. One of the photos
shows Panni and our escort Jeevan using a dictionary to communicate.
A very positive day in many different ways.
