After the tsunami, many of the displaced people sought refuge in schools and ther community sites. Whilst this brought rapid, essential relief to the afflicted it also meant that the buildings were not available for their intended purpose. Furthermore these makeshift camps resulted in rapid deterioration of hygiene and cleanliness in these areas, delaying their use as public facilities for some time. Following previous successful clean up operations the district government official contacted aid sri lanka on Saturday 29th January and requested 3 more schools be cleaned.

On Sunday 30th a cash-for-work force of sixty, split into three teams carried out the essential disinfecting, latrine filling and general restoration of the schools. Through their hard work all three sites were operational for children on Monday 31st. We returned to two schools on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday conducting specialist operations including well cleaning, emptying overflowing septic tanks, and digging new landfill sites. It was fantastically rewarding to see so many smiling faces playing and studying, or, as Kuma ‘our man in Marissa’ likes to say “everyone full happy, quality quality”. In total this project resulted in 1055 students and 63 staff returning to school, up to a month earlier than was otherwise possible.
