Kottagama School: Needs Asessment

This project will provide much needed facilities to improve the capacity of the teaching staff to provide quality education in a safe environment.

A site visit confirmed the urgent need for additional facilities. The school simply does not have enough space for its existing pupils. The classrooms are small and crowded. The unfinished building containing the much needed additional classrooms is already being used but is an unpleasant location for lessons and the children are bothered by insects nesting in the unplastered brickwork.

When the insect problem is particularly bad lessons are taking place in a simple shack in the playground. The palm frond roof provides inadequate protection from the sun and the children understandably find it difficult to concentrate.

Although the school is seeking assistance with completing the construction of the classrooms, the visit revealed that existing facilities are in a state of disrepair. General maintenance of the school buildings and grounds would greatly improve the environment, lengthen the life of existing facilities and remove safety hazards such as broken steps and uneven ground.

Another thing which was immediately evident was a complete lack of recreational facilities. A dusty area with minimal shade provided by trees is the extent of the playground.

We therefore propose to develop a comprehensive project to complete construction of the classroom, undertake general maintenance of the existing buildings and grounds and to provide some recreational facilities. In so doing, we aim to bring the school in line with the facilities typical of schools in the area.
