Thal Aramba Montessori School Update

The work on the pre-school has been progressing well. All the brickwork is now complete, the columns for the veranda are done and the doors and windows are being constructed in the workshop. The site actually now resembles a building and it is easy to visualise the building which has existed only on paper until now.

The teak wood planks for the ceiling are proving hard to come by and we must wait while the logs are cut to the planks we require. Work on the ceiling is on hold until the teak arrives as the rafters may warp in the rain if they are left unprotected. In addition, the internal plastering cannot proceed until the ceiling is in place as both rain and direct sun can cause imperfections in the finish. This will cause a slight delay in the schedule but everyone seems happy as long as the new school is ready in time for the Christmas concert.

The teachers are happy and the children as delightful as ever, keen to share their English nursery rhymes with me. The Montessori school does not have a summer holiday like other schools in the area but they do go on a summer trip. This year’s trip was to Colombo zoo. Unfortunately only half of the families can afford the fee so many of the children are missing out.

We will use some of the project funds which were set aside for general assistance to the needs of the school to fund a whole school outing in which everyone can participate. These children certainly deserve a treat after all they have experienced in the last few months.
