Kottagama: Full Speed Ahead With funding from Sibford School, UK this project will provide much needed facilities to this poor school in the remote dry zone. The people of Kottagama have been busy building, cleaning, plastering and painting at a fantastic rate and with excellent results. The new classrooms are taking form, the internal and external plastering was completed in record time under the guidance of the local head mason whose endless enthusiasm and infectious giggle kept spirits high. The painting is now underway. Some of the older students have also been helping, carrying pans of cement for the masons and applying basecoat to the newly plastered walls. The women of the village did a fantastic job tidying the scrubland and clearing pathways to the toilets and well. A mid-project meeting was held where villagers were praised for their work and given a chance to air any problems and frustrations. As a community project, the imput of the community is essential, it is afterall their school so this meeting was an important part of the process. After discussions it was decided that a more formal work schedule, with designated tasks for work-teams and a signing- in process would ensure that the work was shared more equally between the group as the unbalanced work load was emerging as a concern. It was felt this way would enable the work to be completed more efficiently and the new system appears to be working well. |
