Latest on Thal Aramba Pre-School
Aid Sri Lanka is overseeing the construction of a pre-school in Thal Aramba, Matara. This project is being funded by Travel Aid 50 and PATA.
Regular site visits with the contractor and independent survey confirm that the work is being undertaken to a high standard. Delays in obtaining materials have meant slower than expected progress this month but we are assured it is now full steam ahead.
The majority of the construction work is now complete, with the roof already half done. At a recent meeting with all parties decisions on the final details such as paint colour and flooring tiles to were made. The end is in sight!
With the construction work nearing completion it is time to think about the furnishings. The teachers have been specially trained on teaching in small groups and were clear about how many children should sit at each table to facilitate these practices. We then double checked the measurements of the table layout to be sure we could accommodate everyone using this set up, factoring in expected growth of the school.
A small children’s play area is planned and using digital photos of equipment from around the district the teachers and children were asked to select their favourites. It was then a question of taking measurements from other sites to ensure the facilities are the correct size for these children.
We are keen to employ locals to undertake the work, keeping the economic benefits of the project within this tsunami-affected community and quotes from a number of local carpenters and welders are currently under review.
